Rationale
During the 1840’s and 1850’s, a controversy developed: should civilians
or the military control the Armory? Political leaders got involved and
former employees brought lawsuits against the government.
Goal
This lesson is a guided reading of the “Struggles over the Armory.” Students
will look into the politics of the city of Springfield and the way these issues
were dealt with by the U.S. government.
Objectives
Using primary sources, the students will read and discuss the turmoil over a
government facility and the city in which it is housed. Students will write
an essay relating to the opinions presented in the text and give their own opinion.
